Why We Started
The Background Story
People get into the health and fitness industry for a number of reasons, and I wanted to shine a light on why we decided to start Alpine Powerhouse, and how we are going to use our elite experience to get you the results that you want.
To understand our background, we need to rewind the clock to the 80’s. I grew up around gyms, and athletes. I was raised by an NFL lineman, and by proximity, a lot of the people in my life have been professional athletes. A mix of pro football, baseball, and basketball players and even a pro wrestler, and firefighting and military studs.
So, being exceptionally fit was a normality to me, and I have had a first hand view of what it takes to be at the top of your game. This stuck with me, and when I was finally old enough to start working out, I was hooked. To this day, I love the inclusivity of the fitness industry. This mindset was also helpful with my other great passions, the outdoors. From surfing to hiking, I thoroughly enjoy being outside.
Shortly after high school, I decided that I was going to pursue a career in firefighting. I got a job with a few of my friends on a water tender out of Carson City, and fell in love with that industry. That off season I went to the Northern Nevada Fire and Rescue academy, graduated, and got a job on a hand crew in Incline Village, in Lake Tahoe.
If you are unfamiliar, the hand crew is one of the most demanding jobs in the fire industry, where you are on a team of 18 people, and you use hand tools and chain saws to directly put out the fire. You don’t have any water, and you hike into the fire, packing in what you need to get the job done, as well as what you need to survive for two days. This is an incredibly taxing job that pushes you to your physical limit.
During my tenure on the hand crew, I was introduced to the world of fire aviation. Once I got a taste, I knew what that’s what I wanted to do. I had the opportunity to join the Helitack crew for the Nevada Division of Forestry, and that was the best job I’ve ever had.
Fast forward to today. I am no longer in the fire industry, but I am taking the experience that I gained from practicing and studying strength and conditioning, from staying healthy and in shape during my career, and of those professional athletes, and combining it all to benefit you!
Our Mission
So what is our goal here at Alpine Powerhouse? We want to make our community, and you, as healthy as possible.
There is so much research being done on longevity, and quality of life, and the one thing that is apparent is that being active is incredibly important.
Some of the key indicators of aging well and feeling incredible are muscle mass, grip strength and V02 max (the maximum amount of oxygen a person can use during intense exercise.) Conveniently, improving all of these will make you love the body you’re in, allow you to enjoy life to its fullest, and being incredibly, confident and capable.
Why Hybrid Training
If you haven’t heard of hybrid training, it is a method of exercise that combines resistance training, typically weightlifting, with cardio like running, rowing, air bikes, or ski ergs. The benefits are huge, providing you with the best of both worlds, and allowing you to live a balanced, healthier life.
We love it because it pushes you in the best possible ways, and allows you to be confident in your day to day life.
It has become increasingly popular in the last couple of years for a reason - it works. It’s not gimmicky. It’s straight forward, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. It’s what a lot of my fellow fire fighters use to perform at their best, creates a fantastic baseline for athletes, and it will get you the results that you are looking for.
Looking Forward
While this is the begging of our journey at Alpine Powerhouse, we are built on a foundation of athletic performance, years of learning, and the experience of knowing incredibly hard work. We will be with you every step of the way, using accountability and community to make sure you reach your goals inside and outside of the gym.
We are looking forward to helping you reach your fitness goals, regardless of what they are, and we look forward to chatting with you if you think that we will be a good fit!
